Wrong decision to ban the Academic Walk of Pride in Niksic

Anneliese condemned the decision to ban the Academic Walk of Pride in Niksic, Montenegro.

On the 22nd April, the 'Academic walk of pride' in Niksic, scheduled to take place on the 24th April in front of the Faculty of Philosophy of Niksic University, was prohibited by decision of the police. The demonstration was temporarily banned by the authorities because of, in their words, "increased security risk and risk of violence and other forms of disturbance of public peace".

Reacting to the temporary ban of the Academic Walk of Pride initially scheduled to take place on 24th April, Anneliese, who is Head of Delegation to Montenegro of the European Parliament, stated:

"The protection of fundamental rights such as the freedom of assembly lies at the centre of the EU accession process. Montenegro should be in the position to safeguard an event which is an important and vital part of modern democracy. This ban sends the wrong signal to the LGBTI community in Montenegro who too often still face hostility, discrimination and violence."

"The successful organisation of the 2nd Podgorica Pride on the 2nd November 2014 was an important step to strengthen human rights in Montenegro but equality and the protection of fundamental rights of LGBTI people need to be ensured in every community throughout Montenegro."
