Nazanin Ratcliffe response

To the signatories of the letter dated 22 June; regarding the situation of Ms Nazanin Zaghari-
Ratcliffe

Dear colleagues,

I would like to hereby thank you for your letter of 22 June 2016 whereby you draw my attention to
the case of Ms Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian dual national who has been arrested in
Iran on 3 April 2016.
I am fully aware of her situation and even though the main responsibility for consular protection of
EU citizens abroad is that of the Member States of origin, we have been in direct contact with Ms
Zaghari-Ratcliffe's family and we are closely monitoring her case.
Human rights remain a central feature of EU policy of re-engagement with Iran and this was duly
reflected in the Joint Statement agreed with the Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif during my visit in
Tehran on 16 April 2016.
In this context, we agreed to engage on a Human Rights Dialogue and to exchange visits between
EU and Iran on human rights related issues. The EU remains concerned regarding restrictions on
civil liberties and we do hope to address these and other issues in human rights exchanges in a
constructive spirit.

Yours sincerely,
Federica Mogherini
